PANAJI: Former Rajya Sabha MP and ex-president of Goa
Congress Shantaram Naik passed away early this morning at a hospital after
getting a massive cardiac arrest.
The 73-year old Congressman was a one time North Goa Lok
Sabha MP and twice elected to the Rajya Sabha.
"Sad to confirm the untimely demise of our ex president
Shantaram Naik this morning around 6:30am on way to Trimurty Hospital,"
said current Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Girish Chodankar who
succeeded Naik.
Naik joined the Congress as a party worker and worked his
way up the ranks. He played a role in the passage of the Statehood Bill that
consequently granted statehood to Goa on May 30, 1987.
